Keeping Your Travel Trailer From Tipping Over

Jul. 24 2023 Ownership tips By Pete's RV PA

A tipped-over travel trailer can be a dangerous situation that leads to injury, tow vehicle damage, or RV damage. Use the following tips to keep your camper as stable as possible on your road trip.

Prevent Trailer Sway

Trailer sway can lead to the travel trailer tipping over. Reduce the likelihood by evenly distributing the weight when you pack your camper. Try to keep the weight even from the left side of the RV to the right side of the RV.

Maintain Your Tires

Another cause of travel trailers tipping over is when a tire blows out. Always inspect your tires before an RV road trip and make sure the tires are properly inflated and without damage.

Avoid Sudden Stops

Travel trailer sway can also happen when the driver of the tow vehicle suddenly slams on the brakes. Aim to leave plenty of room between yourself and other motorists. If they suddenly hit their brakes, you'll have more time to react and bring your tow vehicle to a slower stop.

Take Corners Carefully

If you're driving too fast while going around a turn, it could cause problems. Focus on slowing down before you approach a corner so that you can maintain a safe speed into the turn.
